Citizenship & PSHE Policy

Citizenship and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Policy 

Citizenship and PSHE/RSE at Brompton Hall is based upon promoting a basic knowledge, skills depth of understanding so that pupils will have the abilities to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels.  It will help them to become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and their rights.  By combining the course of study with PSHE, it is anticipated that the cumulative result with be the development of well rounded, socially, spiritually and culturally aware individuals, confident enough to take a proactive part in society. Throughout Key Stages 2-4, lessons are planned and delivered around the core themes of Health and Well Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.  Through this they will be able to recognise and manage risk, take increasing responsibility for themselves, their choices and behaviours and make positive contributions to their families, schools and communities.

The Relationships and Sex Education statutory guidance is incorporated into the units of study in the PSHE curriculum and is taught across all year groups. Further information in the school’s RSE Policy.

At Brompton Hall School we feel that Citizenship/PSHE/RSE should form an integral part of the school and 24 hour curriculum.


  • To deliver the National Curriculum for Citizenship and PSHE/RSE through meaningful and relevant tasks completed independently or collaboratively.
  • To develop investigative, research and interpretational skills, and the ability to assimilate, refine and effectively communicate the information gathered.
  • To develop, in the pupil, an understanding of their current and potential role in their society and promote the self-confidence needed to achieve this.
  • To develop and understanding of the diversity of modern society.
  • To develop an understanding and awareness of the pupil himself as an individual and a member of a wider community.
  • To develop an understanding of the key British values of Respect and Tolerance, The Rule of Law, Democracy, The Rule of Law and Individual Liberty.
  • To develop an awareness and understanding of the issues facing or which are likely to face the pupil as he begins to assume his role in society and develop as an individual.
  • To act as a vehicle to help individual pupils to increase their competence in specific skills or to address the need to develop other skills as required by Individual Action Programmes and Education, Health and Care Plans.


Resource materials for the delivery of the Citizenship/PSHE/RSE curriculum are planned based on the specific requirements of each group, in terms of relevance to age, ability and content.  Full use of ICT is made available to pupils when appropriate and relevant, and where possible, class work is reinforced by visits and external speakers.

Training and Development

A primary and secondary staff member taking a lead in the teaching of PSHE/RSE will regularly attend the termly local network and training meetings run by the local authority to ensure lesson planning and delivery.


Assessment in Citizenship/PSHE/RSE is carried out in line with the Whole School Policies on Marking and on Assessment, Recording and Reporting. 

Qualification Pathway

In Key Stage 4 pupils follow the EdExcel specification and are given the opportunity to work towards a GCSE qualification in Citizenship.
