The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
- Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
- Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
At Brompton Hall, we aim to teach a creative, practical and enjoyable curriculum. The teaching staff are supported and aided in their roles ensuring confidence in the skills and knowledge in of a high standard. Pupils are challenged and encouraged to take ownership of their own learning. Projects are made fun and exciting so students enjoy their lessons and try their best with their work.
KS3 and KS4
Students follow the national curriculum throughout KS3 and 4, assessment is carried out throughout the year through classwork and end of project assessment.
In the summer term of year 10 the pupils start their Design and Technology GCSE, progressing to make their final major project in year 11.
We implement our curriculum through using a variety of teaching approaches and tasks. Key skills and knowledge are constantly revisited and key terminology is regularly embedded within lessons and in the written and design work the students produce. Students are challenged to build on their creativity by structured extension work. The boys are encouraged to work in a variety of ways, in pairs, groups and individually, all taking into account their needs and abilities.
The impact of our Design and Technology curriculum is that the students will know more, remember more and understand more about Design Technology. The large majority of pupils will achieve age related expectations in Design Technology. As designers pupils will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood.
Now that we have returned to school following the Covid-19 lockdown, we have adjusted our curriculum to catch up with the missed in school learning time. Year 11 students will start their GCSE Design and Technology coursework, AQA have adjusted the grades making the coursework achievable in the time we have left. The schemes of work have been adjusted over a period of the next 2 years to allow for them to get back to the pre-lockdown scheme of work.
