Information and communications Technology at Brompton School integrates the full range of media through which successful learning takes place. ICT now permeates all aspects of life in a modern technological society and all the pupils are encouraged to become active participants in its use to enrich their learning.

Covid-19 Update

The curriculum and schemes of work have been adjusted over the next year to catch up with missed learning. Lessons will focus on the key skills, knowledge and terminology required for students to make the necessary progress in their subject.


Qualification Pathway: Year 10 & 11 Students

Course of Study - Flexible ECDL at Level 1 / Level 2

ECDL is the world’s leading digital skills certification, which helps people to develop and certify their skills in using a computer. Consisting of a number of modules, with the flexibility for teachers to choose the topics that meet the needs of their students, ECDL is an ideal way for schools to help develop their students’ digital skills.

Schools around the world use ECDL. The programme offers both flexibility, and a range of levels, along with an up-to-date offering that is kept to rigorously high standards around the world. Students can benefit from an internationally recognised certification that is mapped to a number of qualifications frameworks and standards, and which integrates with curricula in several countries.

To date, over 15,000,000 people have engaged with ECDL, and thousands of schools, colleges and universities have adopted ECDL to build and certify their students’ digital skills.


Flexible ECDL - Level 1 units
IT user fundamentals Builds the learner’s confidence by teaching basic interaction with computers, from start-up to productive use and basic computer housekeeping.
Using email and the internet Helps the learner understand how to use internet and email in a safe and secure way, explaining key terms and developing fundamental knowledge of computer security.
Security for IT users Provides the learner with an essential understanding of how to use a computer in a safe and secure manner, protecting their own data as well as that of other users.
Word processing Helps the learner use a range of basic word processing software tools and techniques to produce appropriate, straightforward or routine documents.
Spreadsheet software Enables learners to use a range of basic spreadsheet software tools and techniques to produce spreadsheets.
Presentation software Provides the skills to use a range of basic presentation software tools. Learners will be able to create text based or diagram based slide shows and lecture notes.
Database software Introduces learners to basic database software tools, enabling them to enter information, set up single tables and retrieve information by running database queries.
Using collaborative technologies Gives learners the skills to use tools and devices for collaborative work and communication, such as video conferencing and centralised depositories for documents.
Improving productivity using IT Enables the learner to work more effectively with IT. As a result of reviewing their work, they will be able to identify and use automated methods or alternative ways of working to improve productivity.


Flexible ECDL - Level 2 units
Word Processing Develops the learner’s ability to create word-processed documents: entering text, editing and formatting work, using graphs, tables and pictures for a professional finish, and effectively using tools such as the spell-checker and mail merge.
Spreadsheet software Helps the learner develop a working knowledge of spreadsheets, from entering data and formatting worksheets, to creating charts and producing high-quality documents
Presentation software Shows the learner how to produce high-quality presentations using a variety of tools including charts, graphs and drawn objects.
Database software Looks at creating and modifying tables, queries, forms and reports, and preparing outputs ready for distribution, as well as learning to relate tables and retrieve and manipulate information using query and sort tools.
Improving productivity using IT Enables the learner to work more effectively with IT. This unit looks at using tools to save time and effort when producing word processed documents, presentations and spreadsheets.
Project management software Shows learners how to use a wide range of project management software tools and techniques to input and edit information to support the planning and management of projects.
