Schools receive £500 for each pupil in year 7 who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading or maths at the end of KS2.

Summary of planned interventions for 2015-16

Objectives in spending Catch Up funding: 

To ensure pupils in Year 7 that are not currently achieving level 4 in Maths and English (reading)  do so by the end of the academic year or make at least expected progress from their individual starting points. The Curriculum Management Team (CMT) will work with all staff, as well as the Numeracy Across the Curriculum & Literacy Across the Curriculum working parties to establish a cohesive approach using a variety of agreed strategies for the identified pupils. The impact of the intervention programmes will be evaluated by the CMT.

 

For some pupils, primarily that are working at L3 or below, it is likely that the provision / intervention will be met through a highly supported and structured intervention in which the pupils join mathematics and English or literacy ‘1 to 1’ sessions.

 

For most pupils who join BHS working below a L4, a timed intervention is likely to be the most appropriate, interventions are planned according to an identified need.  

 

English Interventions: The most appropriate intervention will be selected for each individual programme depending on the area of weakness highlighted in the SATS results (reading, writing and/or grammar, punctuation and spelling) and in-house screening.

 

Maths Interventions: Success@Arithmetic (1 to 1 or small group work) boosting pupils from a level 3 to a level 4. Most pupils will work in small groups to follow a structured programme. If, after the initial 6-8 week structured programme, a pupil remains working at below a L4, then this will be followed by a further consolidation programme focusing on the application of basic mathematical skills in different contexts.  

 

 Summary of Catch up funding received:

 Four pupils did not achieve national expectations in reading or Maths at the end of Key Stage 2 (2014-15), as a result the school received  £2000 in Catch up funding for Year 7 (2015-16).

 In both ‘Reading’ and Maths a range of targeted interventions were offered to the identified pupils, personalised to meet their individual needs.

Outcomes

 Maths:

 In class maths support: 1:1 TA support, additional resources, subscriptions to My Maths and Sum Dog. Staff training in intervention programmes (i.e. numicon, Success@Arithmetic).

 

 

 

 

 

 Reading:

 Daily paired/guided reading, 1:1 TA support, phonics programmes, extra-curricular reading activities, small group literacy, library sessions, visits to local bookshops and planned 'Drop Everything & Read' sessions.

 

Teacher assessments, as well as pre and post intervention programmes, showed that all of the students who were eligible for catch up funding made progress from their starting points in Maths. Improvements were seen in the completion of questions, rate of accuracy of answers and depth of subject knowledge application. Three of the students had achieved national expectations by the end of 2015-16, one student continues to benefit from additional '1 to 1' interventions in Maths during 2016-17.

 

 

 Ongoing teacher assessments, as well as pre and post intervention, indicate that of the four students identified, three were making expected progress by the end of the academic year 2015-16 in reading. Additional '1 to 1' interventions continue to be in place to support the remaining student.
